Healing Moments has created an Experiential Workshop for Faith Communities: for Pastors, Pastoral Care ministers and volunteers, Parish Nurses, church members, family caregivers and all those who love persons with Alzheimer's or other diseases of dementia.

About

Members of our faith communities have many pastoral needs.  One of the most rapidly growing needs church members are facing is Alzheimer's or other diseases of dementia.

To help communities of faith provide pastoral care to persons with Alzheimer's or dementia and their families, and reach out to those in need of a spiritual way to engage with this disease, Healing Moments is pleased to offer this ministry to organizations having a religious focus.

Meeting the Mystery of Alzheimer's teaches participants life-enhancing techniques for interacting with persons with Alzheimer's or other diseases of dementia.  More importantly, however, this program invites participants to open their hearts and to recognize the true value of persons with Alzheimer's or dementia.

Through a combination of worship, music, spiritual practice, and creative drama, participants learn to Celebrate the Beauty of Living in the Moment.

These compassionate programs teach caregivers how to implement the recommended interventions for addressing the challenges and stressors experienced by Alzheimer's caregivers by:

  • Combining basic information about Alzheimer's disease and quality of life issues for persons with Alzheimer's,
  • Teaching caregivers to communicate in ways that promote self-esteem and dignity for all,
  • Offering spirituality as a way to find healing and meaning in the face of an incurable illness,
  • Providing caregivers with the opportunity to acknowledge their feelings of loss and grief in a safe, supportive environment,
  • Showing caregivers a way to experience joy and celebrate the beauty of living in this precious moment with their loved ones.

Objectives

Meeting the Mystery of Alzheimer's will strengthen the pastoral care efforts of faith communities by:

  • Promoting the inherent worth and dignity and recognizing the value found in all people, no matter how cognitively compromised they may be,
  • Addressing the need for compassionate and affirming spiritual care for persons with Alzheimer's and those who care for them,
  • Giving pastoral care providers the tools to better serve church and community members dealing with Alzheimer's or dementia,
  • Offering people a unique insight into the beauty and peace that can be found by accepting the unexpected and unacceptable.

After attending this program, participants will be able to observe, listen to and respond to persons with Alzheimer's or dementia in life-affirming ways, ease difficulties that can arise in communications with persons with Alzheimer's or dementia, understand and accept the limitations caused by this disease, ease some of the pain and confusion experienced by persons with Alzheimer's or dementia and their loved ones, recognize and receive gifts of meaning and purpose offered by connecting with persons with Alzheimer's or dementia, and realize and remember that opportunities for HEALING exist whenever we are present in the moment - with a person who has Alzheimer's disease or dementia, with any person.
